Our Story
Almost thirty years of recommending good books.
Akshara opened its doors in Jubilee Hills in 1997 and has stayed, deliberately, a small and quiet place — the kind where the person behind the counter remembers what you read last.

A different world, one step in
Step past the entrance and the city falls away a little. Enormous wooden shelves run floor to ceiling, the lighting is warm rather than bright, and the pace is unhurried. It’s the kind of bookshop that rewards browsing rather than searching.
That calm is by design. The owner and staff have run Akshara since 1997, and most of the regulars are greeted by name — often with a recommendation already in hand, based on what they bought the last time.

What you’ll find on the shelves
The main hall carries new arrivals and bestsellers, updated constantly, alongside collectibles and harder-to-find titles. Beyond that, the shop opens into dedicated rooms and corners: classics and literature, history and philosophy, spiritual texts, health and cookery, and a full Telugu section.
The children’s and young adult rooms are some of the most-visited corners — and Akshara is also known for keeping a deep backlist of manga, including the full run of titles like One Piece, plus anniversary editions of reader favourites.
